In Sicily you will find different types of beach, with flat sands, or small areas with stones, pure cliffs with shades in ochre, yellow, grey and black lava colours. The big cities will offer you beach clubs: the sport events, the white beach with its palm trees, the liberty architectural style of Mondello in Palermo area; the Playa in Catania, described many times by different writers; San Leone near Agrigento or Fontane Bianche in Siracusa, and many more!
The beaches, the most famous in tourism are the wonderful areas with talc sand, crystal clear blue sea and spectacular landscapes, like for example the Tyrrhenian cost of Capo d’Orlando ad Patti (in Messina area), the Caribbean San Vito Lo Capo, Castelluzzo and Zingaro Reserve (in Trapani zone), the Isola Bella near Taormina, Letojanni and Fiumefreddo beaches. The Norman Cefalù, in Palermo area, has a breath-taking beach with sand and stones below the Fortress, while outside the city we will find the Settefrati, Mazzaforno and S. Ambrogio beaches.

The Conigli beach in Lampedusa is defined “the perfect beach”, according to a research published on line by the British daily newspaper The Independent, which identified in its white sand, its turquoise water and in its temperature never below 21 °C, the Dream Beach!
In Salina Island, UNESCO heritage and Natural Reserve since 1981, in western side, a submerged volcanic crater hosts the Pollara beach, with black little stones, under a big and white tuff cliff, covered by capers and prickly pears. On the beach you can breathe an ancient atmosphere: you will find someone which reads a book, who swims, who relax himself by delighting the magic hour, when the sun goes beyond the horizon, among the cicadas song.
During the day, water changes in color: a symphony in turquoise, emerald and pale blue.
The majestic Scala dei Turchi, along Realmonte coast till Capo Passero, near Porto Empedocle is celebrated also in La Prima indagine di Montalbano. It is a charming white-ocher cliff, with big and flat steps dogged by the wind and the raining, where to sunbathe, and a little beach that lightly touches the emerald sea water. Its name comes from its shape and from piracy raids, by Arabic people, called “turchi” that, according to the legend, moored their ships. 200 m far from the shore, there are two rocks. “u ziti” and “a zita”, which remember the history about two lovers.
In Egadi islands, in Favignana, Marine protected area, Cala Rossa is in European beaches top ten list, according TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice awards. The gaze goes from a Polynesian corner with deep blue water, always flat, where reflect pinnacles and the tuff galleries. In Cala Rossa you can take a back dive in the history: one of the first Punic war conflict was done there and its name derives from the blood which stained all the bay after the conflict.
In emerald sea side of Scopello Tonnara, there is the Zingaro Natural Reserve, near San Vito lo Capo. Dated back in 1300, the Scopello Tonnara, near San Vito lo Capo, is neglected along the several anchors that in the past blocked the nets. It seems that you still can listen the cialoma, a propitiatory song from the boats which raised anchor.
Bue Marino is the best beach in Italy, according to the Legambiente 2015 sounding, which is far 4 km from San Vito lo Capo: a little bay made up of white little stones and established between sea and mountain. It could be reachable through a comfortable dirt road, full immersed in mediterranean scrub. A little natural masterpiece, where the sea has several shades in turquoise color and the seabed descends in a slowly way.
Along the Ionic coast, between Noto and Pachino, the orange blossom perfume and the wind are a presage of the Vendicari Natural Reserve, which has inside of itself the precious Calamosche. A solitary and austere sighting tower, which was in 1400 the bastion against the Saracen, announces this little paradise, with its transparent water, rich in kingfishes and white breams. Little palm trees, myrtles and oleasters, agaves and bushes with flowers skims the Calamosche beach, near Noto, in Vendicari Natural Reserve. It has white sand and it is reachable by walking twenty minutes. It is the Mediterranean Caribbean. There, many turtles nest and several migratory birds land.
In Eolie islands, in Lipari, among Acquacalda cliffs, there is the pumice beach, which has the strange aspect of fresh snow, dazzling under sunshines. The sea water is turquoise, thanks to the deposit of pumice stone in seabed and extracted for several years in near caves. One of the favorite swimmers hobby is to slide on the dunes, by covering their body with the pumice powder: it will be sure the smooth effects.
Cala dell’Uzzo, near San Vito lo Capo, is in a long sea cost that you can traverse by walking, following a road of 7 km which go from Torre dell’Impiso till Tonnarella dell’Uzzo, the Big Cave, and flows into the Cala Ficarella, in Caribbean colors. The seabed gives extraordinary emotions to the scuba divings.
Cala Junco is the Panarea star. It is in southern coast and it is like a dream with emerald and turquoise sea water, near the prehistoric Punta Milazzese village. Closed between rocks strange in shape, it is reachable by walking through an old road, from Drautto. By arriving you can admire the natural swimming pool where blows up the bay.
Capo Bianco is a triumph in blue sky colors, at the foot of the cliff, near the Platani river mouth. At the bottom, we can find blue sea, dunes shaped by wind and pine forest; on the top, you can admire the Eraclea Minoa greek temple ruins, founded by Selinunte Dori in 570b. C.
The Belice Natural Reserve beach is a savage place with African atmosphere, in Castelvetrano area, between Marinella di Selinunte and Porto Palo. Here we have 5 km of beach with very fine and golden sand. It is a protected area full of dunes and natural habitat for kingfisher birds, rare jaybirds and reed warblers. There, we could find also turtles Caretta Caretta lay down their eggs.
The Elephant Arch is open of the top symbols in Pantelleria island. It is a particular rack shape which remember an elephant trunk while is drinking sea water. The coast is rocky, but flat and sweetly declined: during high season is a target destination.
At Taormina feet, there is Isola Bella which is separated by the land through an isthmus. Since 1998, the beach, made up of pebbles and gravel, is part of Isola Bella Natural Reserve.
